The Port of Lianyungang,
situated at the middle of the coast of China, is one of
the bridgeheads at the east end of the new Eurasian
Continental Bridge and is one of the coastal hub ports
engaged in coal, bulk cargo and container transportation
in the middle of China's coastal area. The Port has now 24
productive berths, including 20 berths for vessels of over
10,000 dwt. The designed annual throughput capacity is
21.35 million tons and the throughput volume was 17.15
million tons in 1995.
During the Eighth Five-Year
Plan period, 7 berths for vessels of over 10,000 dwt were
completed, among them one is a bulk grain berth, for both
import and export purpose, for vessels of 35,000 dwt, two
are container berths for vessels of 25,000 dwt, two are
timber berths for vessels of 25,000 dwt and two are general
cargo berths for vessels of 15,000 dwt. The designed annual
throughput capacity of these berths was 5.2 million tons. A
6,700m long west dike was built and the navigation channel
was dredged to the depth accommodating vessels of 50,000
dwt.
