The
port of Ningbo is situated in the middle of the
coastal area of China and on the south side of
Hangzhou Bay. The Port is composed of Ningbo, Zhenhai
and Beilum port areas. There are 59 productive berths
for vessels of more than 500 dwt, among which there
are 22 deepwater berths for vessels of over 10,000
dwt. The annual throughput of the port was 68.52
million tons in 1995.
During
the period of the Eighth Five - Year Plan, Ningbo Port
was greatly changed and rapidly developed. On the
basis of the existing 45 productive berths, 6 more
deepwater berths for vessels of 30,000~50,000 dwt.
were completed in the second-phase of Beilum port area
in 1992, out of which one is a container berth for the
3rd and 4th generation container carriers. One oil
berth was extended for vessels up to 250,000 dwt for
Zhenhai Refinery and Petro-chemical corporation. One
coal berth for vessels of 30,000 dwt and another coal
berth for vessels of 10,000 dwt were built for the
power plant in Beilum port area. In all, 14 berths
were newly constructed and the designed annual
throughput capacity was 12.69 million tons.
In
December, 1992, an ore handling berth was expanded
into a berth for vessels of 200,000 dwt, in Beilum
port area. The ore berth was completed and accepted by
the state on 19 December 1995. During the same period,
the technical renovation of Berth No. 3 and the
storage yard in Zhenhai port area as well as the
reconstruction of Berths No.1 and the Berth No.2 at
Beijisi were completed. The special berth for liquid
chemical product in Zhenhai port area also modified
from a berth for vessels of 5,000 dwt into a berth for
vessels of 10,000 dwt.
