VISA

All visitors must have a valid passport and visa for China. Visas can be arranged at any major point of entry, but are most easily obtained (in one working day) at travel agencies in Hong Kong. Applicants must supply two passport-size photos, their passport (valid for at least another six months) and the fee, which varies according to processing time (1-3 days). Extensions can be arranged within China from local Public Security Bureau (PSB) stations. Heavy fines are levied for tourists with expired visas.

Tourist (L) visa
A letter of confirmation of the tour arrangement made by a travel agency in China or letter of reservation of hotel in China is required. Not offten.

Business (F) visa
An official invitation letter with a seal and code from a Chinese Ministry or a provincial government or government-authorised Chinese companies (institutions) is required.

Resident (Z) visa
An employment licence or a work permit or an official visa notice from authorised Chinese organisations is required. Z visas are multiple-entry. Applicants must undergo a medical test or provide written proof that they underwent a medical before entering China.

Student (X/F) visa
Form JW202 or JW 201 issued by the State Education Commission of China and notice of admission from the receiving university are required. X visas are issued to students staying in China for more than six months, while F visas are given to those staying for less than six months. Both visas are multiple-entry. Applicants must undergo a medical test or provide written proof that they underwent a medical before entering China.

An invitation letter from a government-authorised Chinese organisation is usually required for a multiple-entry, six-month visa. However, some Hong Kong travel agencies are now offering them to tourists, for around HK$600 (three working days required).

Transit (G) visa
For a G visa, applicants must provide either a valid visa to the next destination, an official letter of invitation from the next country or an air ticket to the next country.

Travellers to Tibet
As well as a valid Chinese visa, visitors need to pick up a visa for Tibet. Passports should be valid over six months and contain at least one blank visa page. You should provide your original passport, a complete visa application from and one recent passport-size photo. Seven days are officially needed for regular processing, though of course a rush fee is available - for a fee.
