The Port of Zhangjiagang, situated at the Yangtze Delta, is a comprehensive port for domestic and foreign trade and for transportation by sea and river. The port is also an important gateway for Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou to open their doors to the outside world. There are 18 productive berths, in which 17 are deepwater berths for vessels of over 10,000 dwt. The annual throughput was 8.78 million tons and the container throughput was more than 100,000 TEUs in 1995.

During the Eighth Five-Year Plan period, 5 berths for vessels of over 10,000 dwt and one inland basin with 24 barge-berths were built. The annual container throughput capacity will reach 180,000 TEUs when the second container berth is completed.
