Allahabad,
or Prayag as it was once known, has been a city of
holy pilgrimage for devout Indians for thousands of
years. Here, on the banks of the river Ganga at its
conluence with the Yamuna, a twelve yearly festival
is stagged Kumbh, the largest bathing event
in the world, with literally millions of people
participating in the celebrations. Spread over a
month, the Kumbha Mela is particularly picturesque
for the holy men and sadhus it attracts. A lesser
event is the yearly Magh Mela, though by no means
any less impressive.
Renowned
for its learning too, in recent years it has been
responsible for giving the country some of its
national political leaders. A peaceful city, it can
be a quiet retreat for those looking for a tranquil
holiday.
