JAMMU

INTRODUCTION

The lower foothills of the Kashmir Himalayas with their gentle forests and the meandering rivers and streams are enchanting country side. To many Indian they are also mystical. For these, hills are home to countless shrines devoted mostly to Shiva and Shakti, the anthropomorphic representation of cosmic energy in Hinduism. Temples are strewn over the region and attract large following based on mystical belief. During certain festivals these temples become fair grounds attracting country folk thousands in number.


PLACE OF TOURIST INTEREST

There are several temples in this charming city, but none as beautiful as the Raghunath Temple in the heat of the city, with its glided spires glinting in the sun. The Temple was ordered by Maharaja Gulab Singh and completed under the region of his son. Ranbireshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the temple has several crystal and stone "lingams". An other Shiva Shrine of repute is Peer Khoh a cave shrine with a naturally formed "lingams" and of whose antiquity little is known.

Bahu Fort just outside the city, by the banks of the river Tawi. Around the Fort now are the Baghe-bahu gardens with their impressive for snakes. A Ragubir Canel in Akhnoor, Hugging a turn on the bend of river Tawi is the Amar Mahal Palace Museum.
