Extensive
facilities are available for storage of cargo in the docks and
outlying areas. The new sheds have been designed on modern lines
with a steel frame and a wall of pre-cast concrete blocks. The
column spacing has been kept wide enough to allow the use of mobile
cranes, forklifts and other cargo handling equipments.
Container
yards and freight stations have been developed. Warehousing
accomodation is available for storage of goods which are in the
process of despatch either within Mumbai and its suburbs or to the
hinterland of the Port. Pre-shipment storage facilities are also
available.

The
Port of Mumbai owns and operate its own Railway which is connected
to the broad guage main lines of the central and Western Railway at
its Intechange Railway Yard at Wadala. The Railway runs about 11
kilometrs of straight route between Ballard Pier and Wadala and has
network of track of about 138 kilometers. It serves the dock as
well as the important installations and factories in the Port Trust
estates. It has its own fleet of 11 diesel locomotives and one
wagon weigh-bridge of 100 tonne capacity. The Railway handles
around 2.35 million tonnes of traffic.
The
Port is administered by a statuary body constituted under the ajor
Port Trusts Act, 1963. It is composed of 21 Trustees headed by the
Chairman who is appointed by the Government. The other members of
the Board are officials and non-officials repreenting the principle
chambers of commerce, Customs, railways, Indian Navy, labour
employed in the Port, and other interests.
