INTRODUCTION

Mormugao Port is situated on the west coast of India at the mouth of River Zuari. The Port is approximately 370 Km. South of Bombay and 575 Km. north of Kochi. It is an open type harbour protected by a breakwater and a mole running parallel to the quay. The habour is also protected from the south-west monsoon as it has been constructed on the leeward side of Mormugao Headland.

It is the premier iron ore exporting Port of India with an annual throughput of around 20 million tons. The Port accounts for about 50% of India's iron ore export and ranks among the top 10 iron ore exporting Ports of the world.

Through iron ore is the predominant cargo there has been a liquid bulk and general cargo since it was declared a Major Port in 1964. Container traffic has also grown at a quick pace.

MOORING AND ANCHORAGE 

The large road stead to the West & North West of the harbour provides anchorage to about 20 ships during the fair seasons(Oct to MAy). About 8 ships can be accomodated inside the breakwater even during the monsoon period. There are 2 mooring buoys east of breakwater, which are used by vessels loading/unloading cargo with their own gears in stream. They are buoy Nos 5 & 6. The details of these buoys are given below. This includes the following two mooring buoys.

MECHANICAL ORE HANDLING PLANT (MOHP) 

Loading & unloading of iron ore at the Mechanical OreHandling Plant at berth No. 9 is operated by Conveyer Belt System. Details of equipment connected with it are as follows:

LIQUID BULK HANDLING FACILITY 

Specialised facilities are available at berth no. 8 for handling petroleum products & other liquid cargoes like Phosphoric acid. About 1.5 million tonnes of liquid cargoes are handled at Mormugao Port per annum. Phosphoric acid can also be discharged at berth no. 10 & 11 also. Liquid cargoes like caustic soda, Furnace oil etc. are also handled at tankages provided by private operators near Berth No 5 & 6.

PORT RAILWAY 

The centuary old metre guage railway system of the port has been recently converted into broad guage. Railway lines have been provided to the operational areas including sheds, warehouses and open plots. A full fledged reception and despatch yard is being developed to enable loading and unloading of full rakes. Wagon loading in Broad guage has started from Nov. '97.

 
ROAD NETWORK 
 

The Port is connected by National Highway NH-17 and Nh-4A.

 
WATER SUPPLY 
 

Water is supplied alongside berths directly from shore facilities and in stream from a 200 tonne self propelled water barge. Water supply is regulated in accordance with availability of main supply.

 
LIGHTER AGE 

Can be done by hiring privately owned either at outer (WOB) anchorage or at Mooring Buoy No. 6

 
BUNKERING 

Facilities are available to a limited extent for supply of furnance oil, light diesel oil and high speed diesel oil to vessels visiting the port at the berth with prior arrangements with oil companies. Furnance oil can be supplied through shore pipelines on berth No. 8 and 9. HSD can be supplied by trucks only.

 
DRY DOCK & SHIP REPAIR 

A major ship repairing complex with dry docking facilities has been set up at the Port by M/s. Western India Shipyard Ltd. The Floating Dry Dock is of 15,000 TLC for accommodating ships upto a maximum size of 60,000 DWT/215 metre LOA. Besides this facilities for afloat repairs as well as chipping painting and tank cleaning are provided by a number of licensed specialised private firms as well as by Goa Shipyard a Govt. of India undertaking situated in the vicinity of the Port area.
