Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC)
was established in 1962 under the
auspices of the state government. Its
objective was to encourage and
facilitate rapid and systematic
development of industries, zones,
industrial belts, business trade zones
in all areas to the state. GIDCs main
aim always been to bring about a
balanced and systematic development of
the state in a phased manner. Over the
years, GIDC has played a vital role in
acting as a catalyst in the transition
of a state with a marked dependence on
agriculture and textiles to an
acknowledged industry leader in the
field of chemicals, fertilizers,
pharmaceuticals, engineering,
petrochemicals, etc. More importantly,
GIDC and its affiliated bodies went
about building the infrastructural
'backbone' of the state. Understanding
the importance that a fully functional
and smoothly eficient infrastructure
would play in industrial development
in attracting industrials,
entrepreneurs and other investors to
the state, GIDC went on a speedy
execution mode to complete large
projects in time.
The
ready and all - encompassing
industrial infrastructure is there for
all to see. More than 170 industrial
estates spread all over the state have
been devloped and sustained by GIDC
over a period of 30 years. These
oindustrial estates house more than
1,70,000 large, medium and small scale
industries. To complete the spectrum
of developmental activites, mega
industrial estates are under
development at Vidayat, Jhagadia,
Savli and Daha. Such estates provide
entrepreneurs, industrialists,
corporate ventures etc. a solid base
to prosper and help stimulate
industrialization in backward areas of
Gujarat. GIDC itself has channelized
an investment of Rs. 223 billion to
set up 16,326 industrial units in the
state of resulted in industrial
production worth Rs. 253 billion and
direct employment to over 3 lakh
people. A number of indirect
employment opportunities have also
been created for the large rural
population because of the
proliferation of industrial estates
and prjects in rural and semi-rural
areas. GIDC's network is huge and
spans all the development zones and
demarcated areas and progressive belts
of the state.

dividends in the liberalized nineties.

a dedicated team of more than 2500 people operating from 75
field offices service the multifarious needs and requirements
of all investors situated at over 160 development estates.
This set of professionals also include architects and
engineers in various fields. GIDC has the requisite aand
inbuilt expertise and capacity to design and execute works
relating to layering of water/effluent lines, development of
industrial parks, construction of roads, bridges and ready to
use factory buildings of various sizes. Typically industrial
areas are located away from urban areas. GIDC therefore
recognizes the need to provide social infrastructure. GIDC
offers a variety of ready-made dwellings, units and modules to
meethousing needs of units within its industrial estates.
Plots are also made available wherein industrial units can
construct their own housing colonies or individual residences.
GIDC asissts private and charitable institutions in the
development of hospitals, schools and dispensaries. Provision
is also made for shopping centrres and recreation facilities
like clubs, theatres, community parks and gardens. GIDC
provide ample scope for development of commercial support
services.
Assistance
is given to entrepreneurs dealings in raw materials, spare
parts, telecommunicatios services etc. to establish themselves
at ideal locations within the estate to facilitate industrial
units. Storage facilities are provided to local industrial
banks, shopping areas etc. are also available. With the
dynamic needs of today's information age, there is need for an
eficient communication network to faster rapid industrial
development. Thus GIDC is planning to establish
telecommunication facilities right at the outset along with
other infrastructure.
In
the current era of glasnost and perestroika, the entire
process of industrialization is on a fast-track path. It must
be said that the investment in the industrial projects has
increased tremendously. Industries of different kinds, high
capacity utilization and high scalibility are being set up in
the state. Keeping in mind the complexities of each industry
and the multifarious requirements of each industrial and
development area, inrastructural facilities like
communication, power supply, effluent treatment etc. are being
provided ona near war-footing. GIDC has identifies 40
different kinds of projects which include parks and industrial
estates, townships, airstrips, container depots, permanent
exhibition centers, science and technology parks etc. The
estimated cost of these projects is expected to exceed $2
billion. Private sector participation is being encouraged in
projects like industrial parks, industrial estates, townships
etc. in view of the huge infrastructure gap between demand and
supply, GIDC's contemplating to develop certain projects with
private sector participation.
GIIC'S

Financial
assistance for projects withcapital outlays ranging
from Rs. 25 million or more by GIIC alone or in
consortium with other institutions/banks.
It
makes financial assistance available for
expansion/diversification/moderniazation of existing
units.

securistised working capital loan, leasing, hire
purchase, bills discounting etc.

GIIC acts as a vital catalysts in promoting projects
in the joint/associate sectors with equity
participation.

GIIC promoted projects include blue chip companies
like Gujarat alkalies and Chemicals Ltd., Gujarat
Ambuja Cements, Gujarat Biotech, Gujarat
Petrochemicals etc.

GIIC plays the role of the nodal agency in considering
proposala for financing infrastructural projects in
power, ports, roads, bridges and other infrastructure
projects.
