The major varieties found in India are Agrifound Dark Red, Agrifound Light Red, NHRDF Red, Agrifound White, Agrifound Rose and Agrifound Red, Pusa Ratnar, Pusa Red, Pusa White Round. There are certain varieties in yellow onion which are suitable for export in European countries Tana F1, Arad-H, Suprex, Granex 55, HA 60 and Granex 429.

The word onion comes from the Latin word unio, which means "single," or "one" reflecting of the onion plant producing a single bulb, unlike its cousin, the garlic, that produces many small bulbs. The name also describes the onion bulb when cut down the middle; it is a union (also from unio) of many separate, concentrically arranged layers.
The Botanical Name for onion is Allium Cepa L. and belongs to the Family of Amaryllidaceae, also known as the bulb onion or common onion, onions is a breed of Allium family whose other similar produce are Leeks, Garlic, Shallots. Onion is a vegetable that is the most widely cultivated species of the genus Allium, Its taste, spice and color are different in different regions. India itself is a house of a wide variety of onions. Few of them are Red onions, Rose onions, Yellow Onion, White onions, and mixed color onions. These varieties are characterized by different tastes and spiciness. Red onions are the most cultivated onions with the biggest size have high demand worldwide. The shelf life for red onions is the highest among the varieties.

India is the second largest onion growing country in the world, It is widely grown in different parts of the country, The primary onion producing states of India are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana. There are three mainly seasons of onion production namely Kharif crop, late Kharif and Rabi crop, also in some states, onion grown in early Kharif season, The Rabi crop comprises approximately 60% of the total production.
