The rapid development of electronics and digital communications, and the paradigm shift from vehicular-mounted mobile services to hand-held, mostly pedestrian use, have not been accompanied by a major change in the cellular radio frequency (RF) network architecture. This situation is further aggravated by the emergence of mobile data services, which modifies the usage profile and need for coverage.
